10 Things to do in the New Forest this Autumn

About Heathfield / Events At Heathfield / Holidays / In the press / What's Happening

The transition into autumn is defined by the earth’s orbit around the sun and begins every year on the 22nd or 23rd September.

There is something very special about autumn at Heathfield Estate. The New Forest ignites with spectacular reds, oranges and yellows. Its iconic forest ponies, cattle and donkeys are prepared for winter. Pannage pigs roam the forest floor to feast on fallen acorns. Our guests can enjoy crunching their way through fallen leaves, as they follow one of the New Forest walking routes. Returning to Heathfield, spirits will soar at the sight of windows aglow with the flicker of roaring fires ready to thaw chilly fingers and toes. Movies, board games by the hearths and sumptuous dinners by candlelight.

1)    Enjoy the Coast

Heathfield is 5 miles from the coast, a wonderful autumn walk, can take you along the coast from Highcliffe to Mudeford. We recommend ending with a warming coffee and cake at The Noisy Lobster on Avon Beach.

2)    Visit Exbury Gardens

Exbury and its steam railway are open till early November. Exbury has a large collection of Acers, also found on the Heathfield Estate, which look fantastic with their distinctive autumn colours.

Head to the old town quay for lunch or sail to the Isle of Wight for lunch or take the ferry to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight for lunch at The George or the infamous Saltys

7)    Cycle Around

The New Forest hosts a vast number of cycling trails, all of varying difficulty and terrain. These carefully thought out routes are designed to allow you to spot some incredible wildlife. Bring your own bike or Forest Leisure Cycling can deliver bikes to your door, with maps and even emergency packs for unwanted flat tyres.

8)    New Forest Food & Drinks Festival

The New Forest Food & Drinks Festival will run in November 2019, where you can taste and buy the best of local produce, as well as be entertained by top chefs.

9)    Pannage Piggies!

From the 11th September, the New Forest’s unique Pannage pigs will be foraging for fallen acorns on the forest floor. This ancient practice happens nowhere else in the United Kingdom. It lasts for a minimum of 60 days and is vital because acorns are poisonous in large quantities to the cattle and ponies that roam the New Forest. Pigs however are believed to spit out the toxic skins and enjoy eating the acorns.

10)     Get Fascinated with Fungi

With 2,700 species of fungi in the New Forest, you’ll have plenty of beautiful, rare and endangered fungi to see. Please contact our Estate Manager who can recommend suppliers for Guided Mushroom Walks.
